Gameplay:: Remember when your English teacher wanted to ruin your summer vacation by assigning you a summer reading list? Perhaps you’re living that dream now. You should have kept your eyes on your Math teacher. Little did we know that Math teachers would be more subtle and go straight to Nintendo to help keep your skills sharp. Part of the "Art Style" series by developer Skip Ltd. and publisher Nintendo, Art Style: BASE 10 is a puzzle game that requires you to create combinations of numbers that equal 10. You do this by sliding numbers around the board, both horizontally and vertically.
There are 3 single player modes: Zerosum, Puzzle and Infinite. In Zerosum mode, your goal is to get rid of a certain amount of numbers as quickly as possible. In Puzzle mode, the goal is to get rid of a the numbers in as few moves as possible. In Infinite mode, you just get rid of numbers until the game is over. If you don’t like playing by yourself, you can challenge another online player in the VS mode.
I love Math so much, I used to solve algebra equations just for fun, so this game was a great fit for me. You play the game in the book-style orientation, and the numbers slide from the left screen to the right (touch screen). This has proven bothersome for those who are left-handed. As if they didn’t face enough problems already. Then you move the numbers around so the rows or columns add up to 10. That sounds easy enough, but a puzzle game needs to have some kind of challenge. That’s where the actual look of the numbers comes in. They look like the numbers you see on a digital clock or a solar powered calculator. I remember passing notes in class with my calculator - the original 1337 speak. When turned upside-down, .07734 on the calculator spelled "Hello." The same idea applies in BASE 10, which can be frustrating or rewarding when a 2 becomes a 5, but definitely frustrating when a 3 becomes an E. The goal is to rid the screen of all 10-combos before both screens fill up. Once in a while you will get a red number that cannot be flipped. Once you use this in one of your 10-combos, all other matching numbers will disappear. This was a savior for me in some of the more challenging levels.
Overall:: If adding to 10 doesn’t make your head want to explode, you will enjoy Art Style: BASE 10. It is easy to learn, but is challenging enough to keep an MIT student busy for a few minutes. And it was fun. Whether you enjoy beating the clock, strategizing your moves, or just zoning out in a good old marathon mode, there are plenty of ways to get your math puzzle fix in Art Style: BASE 10. At 500 points on the DSiWare Shop, this game is a great bargain. And as the kids in Reading Rainbow used to say, "Don’t take my word for it…"
