It's that time again Call of Duty fans! Infinity Ward has released their second pack of additional multiplayer maps for the booming success that is Modern Warfare 2. Akin to the 'Stimulus Package' DLC, the 'Resurgence Pack' provides 5 new maps at a cost of 1200MSP ($15). 'Carnival,' 'Fuel' and 'Trailer Park' are completely new arenas. Whereas 'Strike' and 'Vacant' make their return from the classic Modern Warfare.
Carnival
'Carnival' starts the DLC off on a promising note. My definite favorite of the three new maps, 'Carnival' is loaded with intricate details, references to pop culture and excellent sniping positions. I'm a big fan of Close Quarter Combat, and while 'Carnival' is intended for snipers; there are still plenty of tight corridors for gamers such as myself. Littered about the abandoned carnival are attractions ranging from a giant clown face leading into a “fun house,” a broken down roller coaster, and various booths. The great thing about such an environment is that nearly all of the buildings are open areas. Invisible walls and shut doors are a rarity, making exploring the many rooms a treat worthwhile. Gameplay wise I felt the nature of the map's theme was expressed directly into the matches. You never know what to expect or where someone could be hiding. 'Carnival' is a unique experience unlike any other available on Modern Warfare 2.
Fuel
If I was forced to pick, I'd have to say 'Fuel' is the most bland of the three new maps. 'Carnival' and 'Trailer Park' both seem like elaborate mazes whereas 'Fuel' is a simple and to-the-point map. This really is a smart move though, as too many complicated and flashy maps would overturn the mostly realistic nature of Modern Warfare 2. 'Fuel' takes place at an oil station, so cement pavement and building structures are laid about. An area I found to be most interesting was an almost desert section, where rough terrain meets with the fuel station. Here snipers can hide about waiting for unsuspecting wanderers; or be shot themselves by a well placed counter-sniper. This is a strong map with numerous buildings providing multiple angles of attack. Though not the most visually stunning, 'Fuel' will be an excellent subtle addition to the current map list.
